Summary

The ideal introduction to the genius of Ernest Hemingway, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories contains ten of Hemingway's most acclaimed and popular works of short fiction。 Selected from Winner Take Nothing, Men Without Women, and The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories, this collection includes "The Killers," the first of Hemingway's mature stories to be accepted by an American periodical; the autobiographical "Fathers and Sons," which alludes, for the first time in Hemingway's career, to his father's suicide; "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," a "brilliant fusion of personal observation, hearsay and invention," wrote Hemingway's biographer, Carlos Baker; and the title story itself, of which Hemingway said: "I put all the true stuff in," with enough material, he boasted, to fill four novels。 Beautiful in their simplicity, startling in their originality, and unsurpassed in their craftsmanship, the stories in this volume highlight one of America's master storytellers at the top of his form。

Well-written book of short stories mostly about rich, really unhappy people。 Another attempt at Hemingway, and I didn’t love it。 I haven’t liked a single one of his novels, but I really liked The Old Man and the Sea, so I was hoping maybe his short form stuff was better。 In my opinion, it wasn’t。

Refreshing change going back to reread this classic collection from Hemingway。

The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories is a nice collection of Hemingway's short stories。 I can see why many believe this to be a great introduction to Hemingway's writing。 He covers a wide range of topics and themes: existential angst, apathy, coming of age, and tainted nostalgia to name a few。 Given that they serve as a sampler of his writing, I found some to be much more enthralling than others。 Regardless, Hemingway does a great job painting some of the more mundane and ugly pictures of The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories is a nice collection of Hemingway's short stories。 I can see why many believe this to be a great introduction to Hemingway's writing。 He covers a wide range of topics and themes: existential angst, apathy, coming of age, and tainted nostalgia to name a few。 Given that they serve as a sampler of his writing, I found some to be much more enthralling than others。 Regardless, Hemingway does a great job painting some of the more mundane and ugly pictures of 20th century life in this collection of short stories。 My favorite quote is found within my favorite short story of this collection, A Way You'll Never Be。 The story follows a soldier, Nick Adams, as he recovers from a wound he suffered in WWI。 His life is afflicted by PTSD, guilt, and mental anguish as he finds his way to the landscapes of destruction left in the wake of the war。 "'In principle, I would have brought you a bottle of brandy。' 'In principle,' Para said and smiled, for the first time showing yellowed teeth。 'Such a beautiful expression。 Would you like some Grappa?'" 。。。more

I can't get over the dialogue which is horribly dated - misogynistic and full of prejudice。 The two stories that were my favorites are the Snows of Kilimanjaro and the Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber。 I can't get over the dialogue which is horribly dated - misogynistic and full of prejudice。 The two stories that were my favorites are the Snows of Kilimanjaro and the Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Fathers and Sons: A man called Nick Adams with his son reflects on his time with his own dad when he was young。 My favorite story of the book。 I liked the writing。 It's touching without being soppy。The Snows of Kilimanjaro: Safari in Africa; a guy slowly dying。 I didn't like all the flashbacks to his previous life experiences in all the foreign countries - not a lot of plot and not very interesting to follow。 I liked the ending though。The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber: Another story about Fathers and Sons: A man called Nick Adams with his son reflects on his time with his own dad when he was young。 My favorite story of the book。 I liked the writing。 It's touching without being soppy。The Snows of Kilimanjaro: Safari in Africa; a guy slowly dying。 I didn't like all the flashbacks to his previous life experiences in all the foreign countries - not a lot of plot and not very interesting to follow。 I liked the ending though。The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber: Another story about hunting in Africa and extramarital affairs。 I liked the plot twist at the end。In Another Country:Literally A Farewell to Arms, just in short story form。 Being a soldier in a foreign country (e。g。 Italy) and dealing with injuries。 A Way You'll Never Be:Gives me massive For Whom the Bell Tolls vibes。 An American soldier called Nick Adams (yes Nick Adams again) on a mission in a foreign place, dealing with dangerous people and traveling through dangerous places。 The Killers:A completely different story (not related to war) that also features Nick Adams。 A pretty interesting little story about two killers tying up diner cooks in anticipation of murdering a frequent customer during dinner time。 The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio:Feels like a sequel to The Killers。 A Mexican gets shot while dining at an all-night restaurant around midnight because he won some money while gambling。 Fifty Grand:Speaking of gambling, this one is essentially about gambling too。 A boxer puts $50k down on his boxing match opponent because he wants to just win some money and go home。 A Clean, Well-Lighted Place: Not much story here, just a snippet about an old man getting drunk at a late night cafe。A Day's Wait: Not much story here, just a snippet about a man and his son who is suffering from influenza and high fever。Overall, still the Hemingway I know who is obsessed about war, hunting, horse racing betting, drinking alcohol and everything macho under the sun。 It feels like he was trying to write a novel about Nick Adams but some of the bits and pieces that he ended up throwing away were converted into short stories。~Excerpts~He had complimented me on how I spoke Italian, and we talked together very easily。 One day I had said that Italian seemed such an easy language to me that I could not take a great interest in it; everything was so easy to say。 “Ah, yes,” the major said。 “Why, then, do you not take up the use of grammar?” So we took up the use of grammar, and soon Italian was such a difficult language that I was afraid to talk to him until I had the grammar straight in my mind。-----Like all men with a faculty that surpasses human requirements, his father was very nervous。 Then, too, he was sentimental, and, like most sentimental people, he was both cruel and abused。 Also, he had much bad luck, and it was not all of it his own。 He had died in a trap that he had helped only a little to set, and they had all betrayed him in their various ways before he died。 All sentimental people are betrayed so many times。-----Nick loved his father but hated the smell of him and once when he had to wear a suit of his father’s underwear that had gotten too small for his father it made him feel sick and he took it off and put it under two stones in the creek and said that he had lost it。 He had told his father how it was when his father had made him put it on but his father had said it was freshly washed。 It had been, too。 When Nick had asked him to smell of it his father sniffed at it indignantly and said that it was clean and fresh。 When Nick came home from fishing without it and said he lost it he was whipped for lying。-----Could you say she did first what no one has ever done better and mention plump brown legs, flat belly, hard little breasts, well holding arms, quick searching tongue, the flat eyes, the good taste of mouth, then uncomfortably, tightly, sweetly, moistly, lovely, tightly, achingly, fully, finally, unendingly, never-endingly, never-to-endingly, suddenly ended, the great bird flown like an owl in the twilight, only it was daylight in the woods and hemlock needles stuck against your belly。 So that when you go in a place where Indians have lived you smell them gone and all the empty pain killer bottles and the flies that buzz do not kill the sweetgrass smell, the smoke smell and that other like a fresh cased marten skin。 Nor any jokes about them nor old squaws take that away。 。。。more

A couple of the short stories were interesting and engaging。 Overall I found it confusing。 Depressing mostly。 I don’t get the hype with Hemingway to be honest。 He comes across as woman hating racist with a fetish for killing/dying。 Nope, not for me。

Favorite stories: The Snows of Kilimanjaro; A Clean, Well-Lighted Place; The Gambler, The Nun, and the Radio; and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber。Hemingway's pioneering and daring work in literary style, best revealed in his short stories, has always impressed me。 I have so much respect for the way he challenged the literary world, forcing the interpretive engagement of the reader to rise and discover 'the iceberg' beneath。 A couple of these stories maybe go a bit too far in the 'for sa Favorite stories: The Snows of Kilimanjaro; A Clean, Well-Lighted Place; The Gambler, The Nun, and the Radio; and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber。Hemingway's pioneering and daring work in literary style, best revealed in his short stories, has always impressed me。 I have so much respect for the way he challenged the literary world, forcing the interpretive engagement of the reader to rise and discover 'the iceberg' beneath。 A couple of these stories maybe go a bit too far in the 'for sale: baby shoes, never worn' direction, but I forgive them that。 One can only stomach so many miserable, drunk colonialists though。 Favorite line: “Each day of not writing, of comfort, of being that which he despised, dulled his ability and softened his will to work so that, finally, he did no work at all。” 。。。more

I really like Hemingway's style of writing, and he also writes very well here, but it did not do anything for me in an emotional sense。 I felt emotionally disconnected throughout the stories, which is a first when it comes to Hemingway。 I am not saying it is bad, just probably with every favorite author a person will have a least favorite work and when it comes to Hemingway, for me this is the one。 Usually I am very moved and touched when he writes, he makes me feel emotions, and makes me think, I really like Hemingway's style of writing, and he also writes very well here, but it did not do anything for me in an emotional sense。 I felt emotionally disconnected throughout the stories, which is a first when it comes to Hemingway。 I am not saying it is bad, just probably with every favorite author a person will have a least favorite work and when it comes to Hemingway, for me this is the one。 Usually I am very moved and touched when he writes, he makes me feel emotions, and makes me think, but I did not have that feeling this time。 。。。more

I was excited to read this book as I had heard good things about it。 But alas, I found i it boring and rather demeaning towards women。 The stories were disjointed, the characters difficult to like。 Some of the phrases/words used were interesting, I forged on through several stories thinking they would improve but they did not get more coherent。 Finally abandoned the book as a waste of my time。 So many really good books available that are enjoyable to read。

I’ve read so much Hemingway and feel like I’m now scraping the bottom of his works。 This compilation of short stories was not intriguing but I finished out of a sense of obligation to read a supposedly great American author。
